8th March 2003: Wellington Championships - 800m - Newtown Park, Wellington
1st Rees Buck 1:53.93 Scottish I turned up at Newtown park today to run the 1500m (see article) ,but ended up having to run a different event as the schedule had been changed and the athletes not suitably notified (see article). I decided that the 800m would work in with my training the best and luckily I was able to get a start. The first lap felt very fast, mainly due to not having run anything on a track since the 16th of February. I was tucked in behind Tim Prendergast, Nick Buck, and Matthew Prosser in fourth as we ran a 400m split of approximately 58 seconds. At 300m to go I felt relaxed and started to pick up the pace. I caught up to the front and managed to get up to Matthew's shoulder as we entered the home straight. I edged ahead with about 50 metres to go and held this slight lead to the line. This race was extremely tough after the previous weeks of base training, but was still encouraging. |
