11th March 2003: Kiwi Milers' Club Meet #7 - 1500m - Newtown Park, Wellington 1st Rees Buck 3:46.01 Scottish I came into this race with the intention of using it as a peaking session before I left for Europe two days later, also knowing that I had the Italian champs on the 16th. When I arrived at the track I briefly discussed what would happen with the pacemaking with Ben Ruthe and Paul Hamblyn. I had promised Paul that I would go to the 1200m split in the required time and I would carry on if I felt good. Ben got us off to a good start coming through 400m in 60 seconds and then maintaining that pace for a further 200m. I then had the lead and went through splits of 60 seconds and 61 seconds for the next two laps. At 1200m in 3:01 I still felt very good and chose to keep going as long as I could in order to help Paul run a fast time. I finished in 3:46 with Paul close behind with a huge personal best. This race was an awesome way to leave home on the way to the world cross country champs and it was great to be able to help another runner achieve a PB. |
